History of Grimes

^

1940s

Grimes Sales & Service was founded as a farm implement dealership by Clayton and Kathleen Grimes.
^

1972

Clayton Grimes passed away, leaving the business operations to his family. Kathleen managed the bookkeeping, and their son, Mel Grimes, took over running the business.
^

1989

Mel shifted the focus of the business from farm implements to buying and selling pumpjacks, marking the start of a new era.
^

2000

Mel partnered with Paul Cheung, forming a 50/50 partnership to distribute HG Pumping Units from a factory in China.
^

2001–2004

2001: In the first year of selling HG pumping units, 20 units were ordered.
2002: Orders grew to 80 units.
2003: Orders nearly reached 200 units.
2004: Orders surpassed 400 units.

Mel and Paul bought into the factory near Beijing, solidifying their role in manufacturing the units.

^

2008

HG Pumping Units dominated the oilfield equipment landscape under the leadership of Grimes Sales & Service.
^

2014

The business was sold to Schlumberger, the largest oilfield services company in the world. Around the same time, Mel was diagnosed with cancer but stayed on as a consultant. Long-time picker operator Kent Lees took charge of day-to-day operations.
^

2016

Mel Grimes passed away on November 16, 2016, at the age of 69, following a nearly three-year battle with cancer. He left behind a legacy of treating his workers like family and building a stellar reputation in the oilfield industry.
^

2020

Kent Lees celebrated 25 years with the company by purchasing it back from Schlumberger. Partnering with Mel’s daughter, Stacey Wempe, they returned the company to local ownership.
